My Turn: Switching to dairy-free diet is a healthy decision

dairy-free-dietMilk is natural and does a body good, but only if you are a calf. If you are a human, consuming dairy products can cause a whole host of health problems. Containing fat and rich in cholesterol, dairy foods contribute to the development of heart disease, certain cancers and strokes – our nation’s deadliest killers.

Osteoporosis is bone loss due to calcium resorption which, even though the dairy industry pushes higher intake of their products, is actually caused by eating too much protein. High-protein foods, such as those derived from animals, leach calcium from the bones as excess calcium is processed by the liver, passing through the kidneys, making them work harder, with a resulting loss of minerals including calcium.

Those societies with little or no consumption of dairy have few incidences of osteoporosis. The famous pediatrician Dr. Benjamin Spock recommended a totally dairy-free diet for babies and children because of health problems with dairy.

Ninety percent of asthma patients who were put on a total vegetarian diet experienced great improvements in the frequency and severity of their attacks. Dairy products are the leading cause of food allergies and have been implicated in the development of congestive heart failure, tonsil enlargement, ulcerative colitis, Hodgkins disease, and respiratory, skin and gastrointestinal illnesses. The foreign proteins in dairy frequently cause juvenile-onset diabetes, and galactose in milk sugar can cause ovarian cancer.

Dairy products contain no healthy fiber or complex carbohydrates and are iron-deficient. Milk can be contaminated with pesticides, pus, chemicals given to the cows and may come from cows infected with bovine leukemia virus, tuberculosis and salmonella – facts the dairy industry doesn’t want the consumer to know.
This past summer when I looked in the milking parlor of a local dairy farm, I was appalled to see the milking cows covered with manure and flies, crowded together in a small building.

In my opinion, the “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer” campaign may be missing a very important point. A dairy-free diet should be advocated, with the result of many fewer cases of breast cancer developing over time. This is a fairly simple solution that does not involved pouring millions of dollars into research, frequently painful experiments on animals, with little productive results. Humans are the only species on the planet that drink another animal’s milk, much to our detriment.
