10 Amazing Facts About Dates

Dates+wonderfruit-1024x716

A soft, ripe organic date is comparable to one of the best ‘caramel’ candies on the planet, and for that reason, many people assume dates have low to no nutritional value.

But the truth about dates, is that they contain many vitamins and minerals including calcium, sulfur, iron, potassium, phosphorous, manganese, copper and magnesium, and effectively help to treat numerous diseases! Nature’s sweet multi-vitamin.

1) Maintenance of Eye Health

Dates contain lutein, zeaxantine, and vitamin A, which is why they are referred to as “eye vitamins”. Lutein, zeaxantine and vitamin A are especially important for the eye retina and macula, which can wear out with age, and of course, lack of eye-protecting nutrients in the diet.

2) Hangover Relief

Dates are commonly used as a remedy for alcohol intoxication. Dates, especially soaked in water, are also useful in easing or preventing severe hangovers.

3) A Natural Constipation Cure

Dates contain a lot of high soluble fiber, which makes them effective at relieving constipation, and preventing absorption of LDL cholesterol in the gut!  The gentle and natural laxative effects of dates are maximized when soaked in water overnight and consumed in the morning.

4) Relief of Allergies

Dates contain organic sulfur. Sulfur is not a common element found in food today, (partially due to depletion of our soil, from pesticide use and not re-mineralizing soil). Organic sulfur compounds are beneficial for reducing allergic reactions and seasonal allergies.

5) B-Complex Vitamins

Dates have great levels of B-complex vitamins, especially pyridoxine (vitamin B-6), panthothenic acid, niacin and riboflavin. These help metabolize carbohydrates, fats and proteins. Who knew dates were so nutritious?

6) Excellent Source of Iron

People with anemia should incorporate (organic) dates into their diet, as these fruits are a great source of iron.

7) Heart Health

A portion or two of dates contains approximately 80 mg of magnesium, a mineral that is essential to overall heart health, including reducing high blood pressure, and regulating heart beats. Magnesium is also involved in over 300 essential metabolic reactions in the body. (Oregon State University)

8) May Help Treat ADHD, Lyme Disease and Fibromyalgia

As magnesium is also used for treating attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), lyme disease, fibromyalgia, and chronic fatigue syndrome, regular consumption of (organic) dates may aid in the treatment of these and many other diseases.

9) Increase Sexual Stamina

Dates contain amino acids that increase sexual stamina, as well as natural simple sugars including glucose, sucrose and fructose which help boost and maintain energy.

10) Maintain A Healthy Nervous System

Due to the abundant potassium content in dates, regular consumption helps maintain a healthy nervous system! Dates are truly a miracle fruit.
