“It’s not you, it’s me“, I said to my antibiotics and turned to home remedies for sinus infections, still shocked that I agreed to take any antibiotics in the first place. I must have been truly desperate for relief.
2 Days later my sinuses were clear. No sinus pressure, no sinus headaches and no congestion. I was amazed to say the least.
In this post, I will share my personal 2-day-sinus-infection protocol with you, along with many more effective home remedies and important information about sinus infection causes, cures and prevention. Ready? Here we go!
Sinus Infection or Allergies? (How to Know and Does it Matter)
Symptoms of Sinusitis (Sinus inflammation), Allergies and the Common Cold are very similar. So how can you tell if it’s allergies, the common cold or a full-blown sinus infection?
Well, apparently a bacterial sinus infection lasts much longer than the common cold. The mucus tends to thicken and discolor, and there’s usually pain associated with it:
It’s Probably Allergy if You Have:
- Sneezing & a stuffy or runny nose
- Clear or whitish nasal drip
- Itchy watery eyes
- A burning sensation in the eyes or nose
It’s Probably Sinusitis If You Have:
- Pain in the upper teeth
- Pressure or paint in upper cheeks, top of nose, between eyes or forehead
- Stuffed nose, mucous is thick and yellow, greenish or grayish
- Symptoms last more than 10-14 days
The remedies suggested in this post will probably help for EITHER allergies or a full-blown sinus infection.
What Causes Sinus Infections? (In Other Words – Why ME??)
Sinus inflammation is a common complication of allergies (food allergies too!), or any viral, fungal or bacterial infections (anywhere in your body, not just your respiratory system).
Even a pinched nerve in your back can cause systemic inflammation (meaning inflammation all over your body, including your sinuses).
Technically, what happens is that nasal congestion produces swelling in the sinus cavity, obstructing drainage and causing mucus to stagnate. This provides a perfect breeding ground for infection.
Home Remedies for Sinus Infections (3 Steps)
First I’d like to remind you that I’m not a doctor, and this information should not replace communicating with your doctor, especially if you suffer from chronic sinus inflammation.
Your doctor may prescribe antibiotics, which were not helpful for me (and according to arecent study, it helps no one and can only encourage resistance) and medication to help with your symptoms. If you prefer the natural approach, this is my protocol for curing sinus infection at home – Naturally:
Step #1 – Symptom Relief and Declaring War on Inflammation
Here are some incredibly effective ways to relieve sinus headaches, sinus pressure and nasal congestion:
1. Essential Oils
Pure Peppermint Oil
There are many essential oils that contain antimicrobial properties, making them a powerful tool for treating bacterial, viral or fungal infections.
Peppermint or eucalyptus oil in a humidifier really helped open up my nasal passageways. If your nose is really stuffy, you can dilute 1 drop of Eucalyptus Oil in 1 tbsp of carrier oil and rub it on the bridge of your nose (don’t let it touch your eyes though).
Alternatively you can use Frankincense essential oil.
2. Neti Pot
Irrigating with a Neti Pot (You can get it easily online) and saline water can really help cure a sinus infection. Irrigation can clear out excess blockage, relieve pressure and stimulate healing. For better results, use the Neti pot a few times a day.
Please use distilled or water marked as sterile, not tap water.
Boosting the Neti Pot treatment: You can add Himalayan salt solution, OR 1/2 spoon xylitol before rinsing the sinuses.
3. Grapefruit seed extract Nasal Spray
Many people swear by the Nutribiotics Grapefruit seed extract nasal spray. Use as recommended by the maker.
4. Steam Inhalation
Steam inhaling is a simple yet powerful way to relieve sinus pressure and headaches, while opening a blocked nose.
The 2 best options in my experience are Vinegar (don’t raise an eyebrow yet) andGinger plus Turmeric.
** Vinegar – This may sound weird, but for many people this relieves sinus infection in 24 hours. Empty a nasal sprayer (to get the fine mist) and add about 5-6 drops of white vinegar.
Sniff it into the affected nostrils 3 times a day. I tried it once and had instant relief. The next day I was sinus-infection-free. Coincidence?
** Ginger and Turmeric – This provided almost instant relief to my sinus headaches. I simply boiled 5 slices of Ginger toot and 5 slices of Turmeric Root in water.
Then I covered my head with a kitchen towel and took deep breaths of the supercharged steam, for about 2 minutes. No sinus pressure for 5-6 hours.
5. Pressure Points
I was really amazed to see how well this works to open a blocked nose. Find the point where your jaw ends behind your ear lobes. Apply light pressure while pinching the tube shut, and then inhale fast and hard. You’ll feel the drainage going down immediately.
I tried it and it really worked!
The herb feverfew is a natural anti-inflammatory for sinuses. If you are not taking any other medication, you can try 500 mg Feverfew capsules from a high quality brand, 2-3 times a day.
Other helpful herbs are garlic, which can simply be added to your food, and Astragalus root capsules.
7. Healing Food for Sinusitis
Spicy food really helps with relieving decongestion and boosting blood circulation to speed up healing. You can make the traditional Pico de Gallo (Chopped onion, tomato, cilantro and jalapeno) which is a really delicious way to cure a sinus inflammation.
Step #2 – Boosting the Immune System
Please do not skip this step. Boosting your immune system is critical if you want this 2-day cure plan to work. All those home remedies above won’t be worth much if you combine it with junk food, stress, over-working and toxins.
1. One of the best ways to boost your immune system is by taking Fermented Cod Liver Oil. It’s a great immune system booster. It contains vitamins A and D, as well as essential Omega-3 fatty acids. This is a high quality one.
2. Oregano oil is not referred to as “nature’s antibiotic” for nothing. You only need a few drops of high quality organic Oregano Oil a day to give your immune system a great helping hand. (See more about the amazing benefits of Oregano Oil)
3. Vitamin C – A powerful anti-oxidant. You can try 3-4 chewable Vitamin C a day (500 mg) to supercharge your immune system and speed up healing.
4. Apple Cider Vinegar – My grandmother used to cure just about any ailment she had with 1-2 spoons of Raw Apple Cider Vinegar in a cup of warm water – twice a day. (38 more incredible uses for ACV – HERE)
Step #3 – Wheat and Dairy Elimination
Food intolerance, allergies or “sensitivities” is another common cause for recurring sinus infections.
For many people, wheat and dairy are common causes for inflammation and mucus build up. I know that whenever I indulge on too much dairy I can feel my nose getting blocked almost immediately.
Other common causes are soy, gluten, and sugar. If you suspect that you are sensitive to some foods, this is the best time to try an elimination diet. Remove the suspicious ones from your diet and note any change in symptoms.
How to Choose From All These Remedies
I hope that it’s obvious that you shouldn’t use ALL of these remedies TOGETHER. Just choosing a few of them, the ones that are most available to you – Will work fine.
Here are a few combinations you can do:
- Neti Pot + Pressure Points + Oregano Oil + ACV (My personal choice)
- Steam Inhaling + Herbal Remedies + Cod Liver Oil
- Grapefruit Seed Extract Nasal Spray + Peppermint EO in humidifier + Vitamin C
- Pico de Galo + Neti Pot + Pressure Points + Cod Liver Oil
