FRUITA, Colo. Runners hailed from all over the area to challenge themselves to one of the prettiest marathons in Colorado.

Saturday marked the 21st Rim Rock Marathon, which Colorado Runner magazine voted ‘Most Scenic Marathon’ twice.

175 runners took on the 26.2 mile race either individually or split up the mileage as a two person team.

“It’s kind of addicting really,” said Kara Roper, who was the first female marathon finisher. “I don’t know, there’s nothing like being out there and pushing yourself and seeing what your body can do. Beautiful scenery helps.”

Participants came from across Colorado as well as other western states such as Utah, Arizona and Montana.

Proceeds from the marathon benefit Mesa Monument Striders and Colorado Mesa University’s running programs.

“I think it’s just a really great sport. I mean anyone can do it and it’s basically free,” Roper said. “I just encourage everybody to get out and use their body.”
