KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Picnic baskets are usually filled with nutritional offenders, but it’s easy to swap out some items for an outdoor lunch to feel good about, Li Anna Kerr, from Life Time Fitness, explained to the FOX 4 Morning Show.
Chips and pretzels are a couple of the items on Kerr’s “no” list.
“Pretzels pretty much are carbs, which spikes your blood sugar, and doesn’t really have any nutritional value for you,” she said.
Instead, she recommends making your own chips by thinly slicing zucchini or sweet potatoes and baking them, because people tend to ignore portion sizes with regular potato chips.
“Once you start, you really can’t stop,” she said.
Another big offender is condiments, like ketchup and barbecue sauce, because they contain large amounts of high fructose corn syrup.
Instead, Kerr said to swap out those condiments on your hot dog for guacamole and bacon — and nix the bun.
She said to get creative by making kabobs with grilled vegetables, or by topping frozen fruit with coconut cream for dessert.
